AWEN Indonesia – Advancing Indonesian Women Entrepreneurs Toward ASEAN Excellence.

AWEN Indonesia is Indonesia’s national representative in the ASEAN Women Entrepreneurs Network (AWEN), which aims to enhance the role of Indonesian women entrepreneurs at the regional level. Designated by the Indonesian Ministry of Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection, IWAPI is the representation of Indonesian women entrepreneurs who drive collaboration, economic empowerment and create opportunities with the ASEAN region.

About the Indonesian Women Entrepreneurs Association (IWAPI)

The Indonesian Women Entrepreneurs Association, known as Ikatan Wanita Pengusaha Indonesia (IWAPI), is a leading platform for women entrepreneurs in Indonesia. Established on February 10, 1975, IWAPI has grown into the largest organization of women entrepreneurs in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Reach and Membership

IWAPI operates across 34 provinces, districts, cities, and sub-districts in Indonesia, with a presence in Malaysia. The organization boasts over 30,000 members, a number that continues to grow as IWAPI expands alongside Indonesia’s development. Approximately 98% of its members are micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), while 2% represent large-scale businesses.

Mission and Impact

At 49 years old, IWAPI remains a vibrant force, driven by innovation, inclusiveness, and collaboration. The organization is steadfast in its mission to empower women economically and serve as a key driver of Indonesia’s economy. MSMEs, which form the backbone of IWAPI’s membership, play a critical role in sustaining national economic growth. During the monetary crises of 1998 and 2008, MSMEs proved resilient, contributing approximately 61.1% to Indonesia’s GDP and providing employment for 96.99% to 97.22% of the workforce. With 62 million MSME actors, they account for 98% of the nation’s business entities, while the remaining 38.9% of GDP comes from just 5,550 large businesses, or 0.01% of business actors.

Challenges and Opportunities

In the era of Industry 4.0, MSMEs face significant challenges, particularly in adopting digital transformation. Research by UN Women highlights that digitalization is essential for MSMEs, especially women-led businesses, to thrive. By leveraging digital tools, women entrepreneurs can enhance marketing, improve financial management, and ensure business sustainability. Digitalization also enables them to balance professional and household responsibilities while accessing broader markets, including global ones.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

IWAPI aligns with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted on September 25, 2015, with a target for achievement by 2030. Guided by the principle of “No One Left Behind,” IWAPI encourages the involvement of all stakeholders—government, private sector, communities, and youth—in sustainable development. MSMEs, through sustainable business practices, can significantly contribute to the SDGs. These practices not only address environmental concerns but also promote social well-being. Businesses that prioritize sustainability can expand their market reach, build consumer trust and loyalty, and access export markets, enhancing the reputation of their products and services.

IWAPI remains committed to fostering women’s entrepreneurship, driving economic growth, and contributing to a sustainable future for Indonesia.
